Small but mighty

Just finished reading this little book of lively heart-warming short stories by Atinuke, which will now be passed on to my six year old.

The characters are small and mighty; gruff and loveable. The noise and rhythms of Lagos are simply evoked with prose easy enough for young readers to cope with. The black and white illustrations work perfectly.

An insight into contemporary Nigerian life and a small pleasure. I especially like the formidable Grandmummy,

‘Tola hurries to put the shopping basket on her head. She does not want to upset Grandmummy. If Grandmummy is upset, soon everybody will be upset. Grandmummy passes on her moods faster than mosquitos pass on malaria.’
